After completing this course, the students will be able to:

· Understand the basic terminology and practical elements of poetry

· Analyse the underlying meaning of a poem by using the elements of poetry

· Identify the representative poets and writers of 16th ,17th, 18th and 19th and 20th century          

· Identify the devices used by the poet, the mood, the atmosphere, the voice and stanza form & rhyme pattern and meter scheme.

· Comprehend the characteristic features of Metaphysical and the Neo- classical poetry.

· Reflect on human values as virtually mirrored in Thomas Gray’s poem.

· Understand the concept of nature as stated by the romantic poets in literature

· Understand the Conflict of Victorian age and literature of the Victorian poets.

· Understand the difference between reason and imagination, literature and revolution.

· Identify the trends in 20th century poetry of Eliot, Yeats and Larkin.
