Process Management

A process is an instance of a program in execution, encompassing the program code, its current activity, and allocated resources. Efficient process management is essential for multitasking and system performance.

Process Scheduling

Process scheduling determines the order in which processes access the CPU. Scheduling algorithms are categorized as:

·       Preemptive Scheduling: The CPU can be taken from a running process (e.g., Round Robin, Priority Scheduling).

·       Non-Preemptive Scheduling: A process keeps the CPU until it completes or voluntarily relinquishes it (e.g., FCFS, SJF).

Key scheduling algorithms include:

1.     First-Come, First-Served (FCFS): Simple queue-based scheduling, but prone to convoy effect and long average wait times.

2.    Shortest Job First (SJF): Executes the process with the shortest estimated run-time. Minimizes average waiting time but can cause starvation.

3.    Round Robin (RR): Assigns fixed time slices (quantum) to each process in the ready queue, promoting fairness in time-sharing systems.

4.    Priority Scheduling: Assigns priority levels to processes. The CPU is allocated to the highest-priority process. Can be preemptive or non-preemptive.

Interprocess Communication (IPC)

IPC allows processes to communicate and synchronize their actions. IPC mechanisms include:

·       Shared Memory: Processes share a common memory region, enabling fast data exchange.

·       Message Passing: Processes send and receive messages via the OS kernel, ensuring encapsulation and safety.

Process Synchronization

When multiple processes access shared resources, synchronization ensures orderly execution to avoid inconsistencies or race conditions.

Critical Section Problem

A critical section is a segment of code that accesses shared variables or resources. The challenge is ensuring that only one process executes its critical section at any time. Any synchronization solution must satisfy:

·       Mutual Exclusion: Only one process in the critical section at a time.

·       Progress: If no process is in the critical section, selection of the next one cannot be postponed indefinitely.

·       Bounded Waiting: A process must not wait forever to enter its critical section.

Peterson’s Solution

A classical software-based algorithm for achieving mutual exclusion between two processes. It uses two shared variables: flag[] to indicate the desire to enter the critical section, and turn to manage whose turn it is. Though theoretical and not suitable for modern multiprocessors due to compiler and hardware optimizations, it illustrates synchronization principles.

Semaphores

A semaphore is an integer variable used to control access to shared resources. Two atomic operations modify semaphores:

·       wait(P): Decreases the semaphore. If the result is negative, the process is blocked.

·       signal(V): Increases the semaphore. If the result is non-positive, it wakes up a blocked process.

Semaphores can be used for:

·       Mutual Exclusion (Binary Semaphore): To ensure one process at a time accesses the resource.

·       Synchronization (Counting Semaphore): To manage multiple identical resources or control the order of execution.

Conclusion

Understanding operating systems requires a grasp of both structural designs and process management strategies. From monolithic to microkernel structures, the architecture impacts system performance, scalability, and maintainability.
